Point Reyes National Seashore

San Francisco California

Point Reyes National Seashore is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s most spectacular natural treasures. Located just about 30 miles north of the city of San Francisco, Point Reyes includes miles of pristine coastline, gorgeous beaches, open meadows, and dense woodlands, to name a few of the habitats encompassed by the approximately 71,000 acres of this national park

Point Reyes offers an abundance of biodiversity and is a veritable haven for many increasingly rare species and their ecosystems.  The park is an ideal destination for nature loving visitors thanks to the wide variety of plants, animals, and environments easily accessible for viewing within the park’s borders. One of the most popular places for tourists is the Point Reyes Lighthouse, from which grey whales and other marine mammals may be spotted during migration season (December through April). Abbott’s Lagoon and Limantour Beach are prime locales for water bird enthusiasts, Elk roam about at the Pierce Point Ranch preserve, and the Bear Valley Visitor Center offers hands on exhibits and valuable information about the natural history of the entire area.

The park is situated along the San Andreas Fault and this unique position gives the park additional geological significance. Visitors can walk along the Earthquake Trail to explore the fault line and learn about the area’s seismic history.

Point Reyes is also an excellent place to learn about the human history of the region. Most notable is Kule Loklo, a replica Miwok village, which offers fascinating information about the indigenous cultures of the Point Reyes area. This is a perfect spot for an educational yet fun school field trip, as well as pleasant place for a picnic.

Point Reyes National Seashore is truly one the nation’s most valuable natural and cultural resources and should not be missed as a San Francisco Bay Area attraction.
