Zuppa

San Francisco California Restaurant

Zuppa is located in the SOMA district of San Francisco at Fourth St., but the entrance to Zuppa restaurant is actually on Freelon, a side street between Brannan and Bryant. A Southern Italian restaurant with old Sicilian flare, Zuppa is a rustic, industrial-chic style restaurant with a great energy and ambiance. An open exhibition kitchen dominates the open space and a young crowd fills the high ceilings with chatter. The menu at Zuppa is extensive and authentic, owing to the chef and executive chef's roots in Sicilian and Southern Italian cuisine. The couple behind the local favorite Globe took over the space previously occupied by Cafe Monk and created this superbly rustic restaurant. Joseph Manzare and his wife/partner Mary Klingbeil, along with Executive Chef Rudy Mihal, have created a wondrously inspired and authentic menu of Southern Italian favorites.

Zuppa servers dressed in tuxedos filter through the crowd, serving up Italian classics including cutting boards piled with tender cured meats alongside warm focaccia and wood-fired pizzas with chewy crusts. Pasta dishes are available, including a rich pork ragł with rigatoni and topped with a coarsely grated caciocavallo cheese. The delicious main course meals include Bistecca alla Pizzaiola con Origano or bone-in rib eye with roasted garlic in a light tomato sauce and the Salmone alla Brace Soto la Salsa Salmorigilio or grilled wild salmon on herb salad. The Italian wine list is extensive and diners can order by the glass. The dessert menu at Zuppa is excellent with a featured fig tart that is sweet and filling.
